Mountain bike demo day 23rd March, muddy and wet.

As the week went on the bad weather forecast kept getting shifted back later and later in the week until  it broke late on Friday . The rain was set to finish Saturday morning and, sure enough, by the time we had set up the Ezi-ups and got the bikes out the rain had stopped.

Would anyone turn up? I don’t know why I would be worried, our customers are keen and hardy? As the time for the first ride approached more and more arrived keen to try one of the Scott, Whyte, Marin or Niner bikes. Of course all were 29ers and for many it was their first time on what for them was a new phenomena in mountain biking. For us they are verging on being old school.

Matt was there from Science in Sport giving out free bottles, samples of new flavours and detailed information on nutrition and recovery. Caroline was there for the morning giving riders the low down on the Scotts. She was off in the afternoon for the first round of the NPS in the snow. The most sort after bike of the day was the Genius 720 (650B/150mm travel) but unfortunately Scott only had one. Looking after Marin and Whyte was Morgan from ATB Sales. It was interesting that there were 22 rides booked on the Scotts and 22 for the Whytes. Both brands have been turning heads with their 29er hardtails and notably their full suspension bikes in the press of late.

Riders were welcomed back from each muddy trip with tea, biscuits, cake and the big hit at lunchtime: bacon butties. Each ride was lead by Jimbo from South Downs MTB Sklls and involved and single track climb, a nice twisty single track descent around Cissbury Ring and then back up for a rutted downhill descent. The route is a great test for the bikes and riders taking between 45 to 60 minutes. We are lucky to be situated so close to the Downs.

Thanks to all who came and the all the staff and helpers: Gav, Janet, Corrie, Jimbo, Miles, Chris, Will, Ash,  Cazza, Morgan, Matt, Deadly, Brooker, Michael, and the rain god.

And what about me? No time to ride so I am going to have to send back the Niner Jet carbon and Wilier Cento Uno RS without even putting my leg over them. I have to go to Birmingham to pick up my son tomorrow!
